The next iPhone SE is coming soon. As early as early 2025, according to reports. You can say it has been a while—the current-generation model dates to 2022—but it seems, the wait would be worth it. For those unaware, the iPhone SE, which is short for special edition, is Apple’s entry-level iPhone line almost exclusively targeted at budget-conscious buyers.
Since the current version came out in 2022 and Apple continues to sell it, the iPhone SE is—now—the last of its kind with a home button and lightning port for charging and data syncing. This is because it is based on the iPhone 8. The next iPhone SE, aka the 2025 version, will be more modern and sophisticated. Reputed Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says Apple will use the iPhone 14 as base design for the upcoming iPhone SE. The model is reportedly codenamed V59 internally.
What this means is that it would come with an edge-to-edge design with a notch and Face ID—same as the iPhone 14. You can also expect a second camera (the current version has only one). Upgraded base storage could be a possibility as well (the current version starts at 64GB). But the biggest surprise—per Gurman’s sources—is the support for Apple Intelligence.
While the scope and scale of features isn’t known, we know that Apple Intelligence needs more RAM, which is why this year’s iPhone 16 series comes with 8GB by default (and iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus don’t support it because they have only 6GB). Could it be that the budget iPhone SE could have 8GB of RAM as well—maybe.
Then of course is the choice of chip. The SE models have usually had far superior processors than what their design would have you believe. The 2022 iPhone SE has the A13 Bionic which is actually a flagship chip from the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The next iPhone SE could get the same chip as the iPhone 15, or even the iPhone 16, perhaps.
The next iPhone SE as and when it launches should be the most affordable next-gen iPhone and the bevy of anticipated upgrades—we just talked about—could make it a dream phone for most people. It could also help Apple compete with budget Android players in markets like India and China better. The 2022 iPhone SE starts at Rs 47,600.
