Israel Air Strike Lebanon Latest News Live: An Israeli airstrike has cut off a main highway linking Lebanon with Syria, leaving two huge craters on either side of the road. The airstrike Friday rendered the road unusable for cars, leaving people to go on foot to the Masnaa Border Crossing where tens of thousands of people fleeing war in Lebanon have crossed into Syria over the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that if Israel “takes any step or measure against us, our retaliation will be stronger than the previous one.” In another update, the Israeli military estimates it has killed around 250 Hezbollah fighters since the start of its ground operation in Lebanon earlier this week.
What’s the situation? Most recent Israeli strikes in Beirut targeted senior Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine, news agency Reuters reported citing Axios. Safieddine is the leader who is widely regarded as the heir of the slain Hassan Nasrallah. More than 1,900 people have been killed and over 9,000 wounded in Lebanon in almost a year of cross-border fighting, with most of the deaths occurring in the past two weeks. The Israeli military has warned people to evacuate communities in southern Lebanon that are outside an UN-declared buffer zone, signalling that it may widen a ground operation launched earlier.
How India is responding to the conflict? India has high stakes in the West Asian region and has voiced concerns over Iran and Israel being on the brink of an all-out war. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday to discuss the outbreak of fresh hostilities, news agency PTI said quoting sources. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs said: “It is important that the conflict doesn’t take a wider regional dimension and we urge that all issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.”
