The 10th anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s arguably most epic film is almost here and it’s getting a suitably epic celebration. Interstellarthe galaxy-spanning, time-traveling, family-focused sci-fi film was originally released on November 5, 2014, and, as previously announced, it’s returning to theaters. It’s also getting an impressive, brand-new home release. Now, after a few months of speculation and confusion, the final dates and details are finally here.
The biggest news is that Interstellar will be returning to IMAX screens December 6 and now we know that tickets for the limited engagement go on sale November 7. We’ve also learned that a Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD set will arrive December 10 with a nice mix of special features both new and old as well as some awesome collectibles. Here’s an image.
The box set has the 4K disc, Blu-ray, and then another Blu-ray with “more than two hours of new and legacy bonus content that delves into the science of the film, its groundbreaking production, and a brand-new discussion of the film’s impact 10 years later.” You also get a digital copy of the film and “reproductions of five costume patches, five theatrical poster reproductions, and a never-before-seen storyboard sequence from the director’s archives.” Yes, all of this was done with the help and approval of Nolan himself.
The key feature of this release though seems to be a new documentary called “The Future Is Now: A Look Back at Interstellar” which Paramount describes as follows:
“Explore the impact of Interstellar 10 years later through new interviews with director/co-writer Christopher Nolan, producer Emma Thomas, executive producer Kip Thorne, and co-writer Jonathan Nolan. From the development of prophetic black hole visuals to revolutionary production design for IMAX, further context is provided by colleagues and fans including director Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) and director Denis Villeneuve (Dune).”
Then there’s a whole list of other stuff too, most of which was presumably on the original release but, hey, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Here’s the rundown:
