Andhra Pradesh govt commits Rs 20 crore annually for police welfare

Vijayawada: The state govt has committed 20 crore annually for police welfare and has already allocated 100 crore in four months, said chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Monday. During his address at the Police Commemoration Day celebrations, the CM emphasised on the crucial role police play in maintaining law and order and protecting citizens.
The chief minister paid homage to police martyrs, and recalled their sacrifices. He mentioned the historical incident of Oct 21, 1959, where Indian police faced a surprise attack by Chinese forces in Ladakh. He honoured officers like KS Vyas, G Paradesi Naidu, and Umesh Chandra for their service and sacrifice. He said the state will soon fill 6,100 constable posts and enhance technological support for the department, including modern equipment and surveillance systems. He mentioned the previous investments, such as 150 crore for vehicles and 320 crore for infrastructure.
Criticising the previous govt for neglecting police welfare and failing to allocate funds for important resources, like fingerprint identification systems and CCTV cameras, he said AP police are incorporating technology, like drones, CCTVs, and body-worn cameras, for better monitoring and crime prevention. He promised a robust surveillance system, especially in sensitive areas. The chief minister stressed his vision for a crime-free AP, where lawbreakers will be deterred by a strong and technologically advanced police force. He also vowed to ensure strict action against those committing crimes under political cover.
Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha honoured the sacrifices of police officers who laid down their lives for the nation’s security. She mentioned that the central govt implemented a new initiative last year, designating the period from Oct 21 to 31 as ‘Police Flag Day’ to honour the service and bravery of police officers. She paid tribute to the fallen officers, recognising their duty in protecting citizens’ lives and property. She also highlighted the efforts of police personnel during the recent floods in Vijayawada and praised their work in maintaining law and order while also ensuring the smooth conduct of major events such as Srivari Brahmotsavams, Dasara Sharannavaratri, and Sirimanotsavam in Vizianagaram.
Anitha also highlighted state govt’s commitment towards freeing the state of drugs. She said that a special cabinet subcommittee has been set up, along with a state task force, to tackle drug-related issues. Additionally, awareness campaigns through social media platforms aim to keep the youth away from drugs and cannabis.
DGP Dwarka Tirumala Rao described Oct 21 as a day of supreme sacrifice, marking the bravery of Indian police forces. He paid tribute to the CRPF martyrs who sacrifised their lives defending the country in 1959. He said that they fought till their last breath without retreating and their heroic actions have inspired generations of police officers across the nation. “Being a police officer isn’t a mere job; it’s a lifelong dedication to society. It involves constant vigilance against risks and dangers,” he said. He emphasised that police personnel must be brave, resolute, and selfless, prioritising the safety of the public over personal or family well-being.
Chief secretary Neerabh Kumar Prasad, IG Intelligence CH Srikant, senior police officers, personnel, and families of police martyrs attended the event. They paid their respects to the brave officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
