TIRUPATI: A BDS second year student committed suicide by jumping off from the fifth floor of his hostel building at a private college at Chintareddypalem in Nellore on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Pradeep, a native of Tadipatri in Sri Sathya Sai district.
Pradeep’s elder brother Akhil alleged that ragging and sexual harassment by seniors was the main reason behind the suicide.
“My younger brother Pradeep was being sexually harassed by an MBBS second year student Rahul and his friends. He was supposed to come home for the weekend holidays. But around 2.55 am today, Pradeep sent me a message stating that he was going to commit suicide as he was unable to bear the harassment meted out to him by Rahul and other seniors”, Akhil alleged.
The victim’s brother stated that after receiving Pradeep’s message and a missed call so early in the day, he alerted his relatives at Nellore and by the time they reached there, Pradeep had already jumped off from the 5th floor of the hostel building and committed suicide.
Akhil stated that Pradeep had also mentioned Rahul as the reason for his suicide which he wrote on the wall of his hostel room just moments before committing suicide.
The victim’s family appealed to the police to conduct a fair investigation in the case and severely punish everyone responsible for Pradeep’s suicide.
Meanwhile, Nellore SP G Krishnakanth dismissed off the ragging allegations and clarified that the suicide was due to the personal disharmony between two close friends.
“However, we are also investigating into the sexual harassment accusations being made by the family members of the deceased student and will soon establish the actual reasons behind the suicide”, Nellore SP asserted.
