Hyderabad: Tense moments were witnessed for the second day at Dr BR Ambedkar statue at Tank Bund with police increasing security in the vicinity on Wednesday.
The Central Zone police have deployed additional forces and police vans as a preventive measure and in anticipation of and law and order issue. Dalit groups continued to gather at the spot and stage their protest, however, for a brief time. Senior police officials were on the ground monitoring the situation.
“The situation has been peaceful and under control. Additional force has been deployed to handle any untoward incident,” said N Sanjay Kumar, ACP Saifabad.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, tension prevailed after Dalit organisations demolished the newly constructed wall around the statue.
The protestors raising slogans condemned the move to increase the height of the wall around the statue. They further demolished the wall leading to tension in the area and the police taking few protestors into preventive custody.
Meanwhile, the GHMC authorities had said that the wall was constructed as part of efforts to enhance key junctions in the city. The development features a replica of the Parliament building, symbolising Ambedkar’s immense contributions to the Constitution of India and parliamentary democracy, it said.
