Leaders gather in Kazan for the BRICS summit, featuring a gala concert

Ahead of the BRICS summit in Kazan on Wednesday, leaders of delegations from member countries were treated to a gala concert as part of the evening programme at the high-level meeting being hosted by Russia.

During a musical event, several BRICS leaders, including President Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were seen enjoying a performance of the legendary Russian song “Kalinka.” It is a folk-style song written in 1860 by the composer and folklorist Ivan Larionov and first performed in Saratov as part of theatrical entertainment.

Since the end of World War II, the song has been popularised by the Alexandrov Ensemble, the official army choir of the Russian Armed Forces. The famous song was performed in Kazan, where BRICS chair Russia is hosting the summit as part of its rotational presidency.

On the first day of the BRICS summit, Modi held bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. On Wednesday, PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a bilateral meeting, the first such talks in five years. The meeting between Modi and Xi is significant as New Delhi and Beijing announced on Monday that they have agreed to disengage and begin patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Earlier, in his departure statement, Modi said India values the close cooperation within BRICS, which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on several issues concerning the global developmental agenda. The Prime Minister said the expansion of BRICS with the addition of new members last year has added to its inclusivity and agenda for the global good.
