“The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) expresses deep grief over the tragic on-duty death of G Shyam Sunder, an Uber bike taxi driver, and calls for immediate action. This tragedy exposes not only the lack of protection for gig worker, but also raises serious concerns about the illegal operation of bike taxi services by aggregator companies in Telangana. Such negligence puts drivers and customers at grave risk,” said Shaik Salauddin, founder president of TGPWU.
The TGPWU has demanded that as per the Workmen Compensation Act financial assistance should be given by the cab aggregator company to support the victim’s family, apart from Rs 5 lakh compensation by the govt. The union also demanded strict enforcement of transport laws to end illegal private bike taxi operations and ensure accountability from all aggregator platforms.
