VIJAYWADA: The Union cabinet approved a new railway line to Andhra Pradesh’s capital city, Amaravati, with a cost of Rs. 2,245 crore, on Thursday.
The 57-km track will be constructed from Yerrupalem on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad line to Nambur on the Vijayawada-Guntur line to connect the new capital city.
A 3.2 km long river overbridge will also be part of the new line.Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the Cabinet’s decision in New Delhi.
The project was originally proposed during the previous TDP regime (2014-19) and received approval from the Railway Board.
However, the railway ministry did not pursue the project after the subsequent YSRCP regime did not advocate for it.
The new railway project is expected to connect Amaravati with all major metros by linking the existing trunk lines to Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
