VIJAYAWADA: Former IAS Jannat Hussain, 73, passed away in Nellore on Friday. He retired as special chief secretary in undivided Andhra Pradesh and also served as chief commissioner of Right To Information (RTI). He served as principal secretary to the then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and also K Rosaiah. He became popular when he was seen taking the signature of YS Rajasekhar Reddy on giving free power to the farmers after swearing in ceremony held in LB stadium in 2004.
Jannat was known for his integrity, honesty and down-to-earth attitude.He was credited with initiating several welfare schemes for the benefit of the poor with the support of then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. He has been struggling with health issues for the past few years.
He used to meet commoners and poor in the secretariat coming with various grievances and advise the concerned authorities to resolve the issues on the spot. Jannat had also worked closely with the minority associations in bringing 4 percent reservations to muslims in AP. Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the death of Jannat Hussain. He extended condolences to the family members.
Jannath’s son Niaz said that the body would be taken to Kundanbagh, Hyderabad by evening and final rites would be performed on Saturday.
“He is a great personality. Very humble and commoners’ officer. He is a model for upcoming IAS officers as to how to receive and resolve the commoners grievances,” said former CEO of AP State Energy Conservation Mission, A Chandrasekhara Reddy. He is also known as a courageous IAS who used to politely turn down political pressures. He declared the Congress nominee Doddapaneni Indira got elected as ZP chairperson despite pressures from then ruling TDP leaders when he worked as Guntur district collector during 1986-87.
Muslim United Front (MUF) president Habib-Ur-Rehman condoled the death of Jannat Hussain. “He lived his life in the service of the poor. His death is a great loss to the society,” said Rehman.
