Since the current RC was valid till Nov 2024, I had time on my hand to get the inspection done.
BHPian chiranjitp recently shared this with other enthusiasts:
25th year re-registration/renewal
Our Omni was bought home on 22.10.99, initial registration was done on 05.11.99, valid for 15 years i.e till 05.11.2014. Then again renewal of registration was done for 5 years twice. The current registration had validity till 05.11.2024. Last two renewals went very smoothy, all the procedures were done in offline mode & also the cost was very minimal at around 1k.
Since then there has been many changes, first the transport department (along with many other Govt. departments) went online, next was the increase in cost of renewal. The Assam Motor Vehicles Taxation Act was amended in 2022 & accordingly the cost for all vehicle related tax went up. Assam Govt. previously didn’t collect any form of green tax, now green tax was being levied based on the cc of the engine. Anyways all these meant I was looking at a cost of around 10k, 10 times more than the previous two times. I am personally okay with paying 10k for 5 year renewal, as long as they continue allowing the renewals. However I am sure not many would be happy to pay such a big amount for RC renewal, those cars sadly will be plying on our roads without valid documents or even worse taken off the road (scrapped) .
I was casually going through the mparivahan site few days back & the option to pay for renewal of registration was open, so I went ahead. The cost came to Rs. 10200 & the payment was done online, also Form 25 (form for renewal of certificate of registration) was auto filled. All I had to do was to take a printout of the form (& payment receipt) & then visit the DTO (we have district transport office here, not regional transport office) office for the actual physical inspection.
Since the current RC was valid till Nov 2024, I had time on my hand to get the inspection done. But me being me, I visited the DTO office next day . Even there the process was smooth, as expected in a Govt. department I had to move a fair bit from table to table, to take a few signatures/noting from different persons. Finally it was time for the actual inspection, which also went smoothly. Assam DTO doesn’t no longer issue physical copy of RC, instead one has to download them virtually on the mparivahan website. Accordingly I downloaded my new RC, with validity extended upto 05.11.2029.
