In a bizarre incident, a man, who was reportedly in an inebriated state, recklessly ignited a lighter and started fire at a petrol pump in Hyderabad on Saturday, putting himself and nearby individuals in danger, officials said. A video of the incident went viral among the netizens on social media.
According to media reports, the man, identified as Chiran, arrived at the fuel station in the Nacharam area in intoxicated state and was holding a cigarette lighter. One of the employees at fuel station, Arun asked the accused if he was planning to light up the device. He then challenged and dared Chiran to “do it if he had the guts.”

In response to the challenge, Chiran ignited the lighter, sparking a sudden blaze as fuel was being dispensed into a scooter. The CCTV footage showed the frightening moment when a woman and a child standing nearby narrowly escaped as the fire broke out, while others ran to safety amidst the sudden chaos.
The police arrested both the men– Chiran, who ignited the fire, and Arun, who provoked and challenged the accused. The police charged them over “mischief by fire and explosives.”
Both the accused, who hail from Bihar, will be presented in court, the police said.
“This dangerous act not only put lives at risk but could have caused a catastrophic explosion, especially in this crowded area with heavy traffic,” NDTV quoted Inspector G Rudvir Kumar, Nacharam Police, as saying.
