Vijayawada: The on-site composting units established by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) at Rythu bazaars across the city have become ineffectual. A majority of these units have remained inoperative since 2022.
The VMC had instituted the on-site composting units at vegetable markets with the objective of enhancing the Swachh Survekshan Ranking in 2018.
The civic body estimated that approximately 550 metric tonnes of garbage is generated in the city daily. Of this, 80 metric tonnes are wet waste produced in vegetable and fruit markets.
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation had initiated multiple plants in Rythu bazaars and residential colonies. Each plant cost the civic body around 20 lakh.
Officials had established composting plants to process 200 metric tonnes of wet waste per day.
Approximately eleven on-site composting units were established across the city at an estimated cost of 2 crore in 2018. A majority of these units became non-functional after 2021.
Officials initially attributed the defunct composting units to the Covid-19 crisis and later did not restore them.
Residents expressed dissatisfaction with the civic body’s apathy.
“The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, which pursued Swachh Survekshan rankings, had installed on-site composting units that became nominal. The civic body invested a substantial amount in these plants, which failed to yield results. The VMC can generate significant revenue by selling vermicompost,” stated CPM state secretary Ch Babu Rao.
He asserted that the VMC is failing to implement the on-site composting initiative and is squandering substantial public funds on unsuccessful projects.
Meanwhile, VMC authorities stated that they plan to restore the composting units in the near future.
