Vijayawada: The previous YSRCP govt used 119 crore meant for sports development under the ‘Aadudham Andhra‘ program to sway young voters rather than support athletes, alleged Animini Ravi Naidu, chairman of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP).
Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Naidu claimed that the ‘Aadudham Andhra’ initiative, typically aimed at promoting sports among youth aged 13 to 16, was targeted at those above 17— potential first-time voters — instead of budding athletes. He alleged that the Jagan-led govt organized this event with political motivation, detracting from its original purpose to foster athletic talent. He announced plans to request a CID inquiry, asserting he has substantial evidence of financial misappropriation.
“By Sankranti, those who misused the Aadudham Andhra funds will face severe consequences,” he stated.
He further criticized the previous administration for neglecting sports infrastructure, citing the disrepair of stadiums built at high costs but left unfinished. Naidu assured that these facilities would be completed promptly and made accessible to athletes. He also expressed SAAP’s commitment to holding the national games in Andhra Pradesh soon, emphasizing the need to develop required facilities.
Naidu added that he suspects irregularities in the issuance of sports certificates during the YSRCP regime and plans a review to ensure transparency. He affirmed that SAAP will collaborate with sports associations to identify and support talented athletes for the upcoming national games.
To enhance facilities, Naidu announced that district sports officers will assume control of indoor stadiums in November..
