50 from Hyderabad suffer firecracker related injury, few admitted to Hospital

Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Diwali festivities took a grim turn this year as hospitals across the city reported a significant number of firecracker-related injuries, particularly eye injuries.

50 patients treated for eye injuries

Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, a government-run facility, alone treated 50 patients, including children, for eye injuries sustained during the celebrations on Thursday night. According to hospital authorities, 45 of these patients were treated for eye injuries, with 34 suffering minor wounds while the remaining were brought in with more serious injuries.

Dr Modini Pandharpurkar, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, emphasised the need for greater caution while using firecrackers.

“Compared to last year, the number of cases is relatively low, but we anticipate a few more cases today and tomorrow, including possible referrals from nearby districts,” she said.

She added that the hospital had reinforced its emergency services in anticipation of the Diwali season, ensuring that adequate medical assistance was available for those affected.

Children among the injured

Among the young patients admitted was a six-year-old child, who suffered an injury to her left eye when a piece of a sparkler broke off and lodged in her eye.

Naresh, her father, shared his concerns, saying, “She was holding a sparkler. Most of it was burnt, but a piece broke off at the end and lodged in her left eye. She started crying immediately, and we rushed her here late in the night.” Doctors attended to the child and ran tests to assess the severity of her injury. “They ran some tests, and we’re waiting for the results. If everything’s clear, they’ll discharge her by evening,” Naresh added.

Surgeons perform minor procedures

Among the cases received at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, two children required minor surgical procedures due to foreign particles lodged in their corneas.

Dr Modini said that the admitted patients were in stable condition and expected to be discharged within the next two days. She also highlighted the health risks associated with the pollution caused by firecrackers.

“The air pollution from firecrackers can lead to respiratory issues, especially in children and the elderly. We advise people to either refrain from bursting crackers or take necessary precautions,” she said.

Citywide hospital reports on firecracker injuries

Other government hospitals, including Osmania General Hospital and Gandhi Hospital, also reported a rise in admissions due to firecracker injuries.

Dr Rakesh Sahay of Osmania General Hospital confirmed that seven patients were admitted with injuries caused by firecrackers. Most of these cases involved burns and bodily injuries from mishandling firecrackers.

In response, both Osmania and Gandhi Hospital reinforced their emergency wards with additional doctors and paramedics to prepare for any surge in cases.

Fire accidents across Hyderabad

In addition to the eye injuries, Hyderabad saw multiple fire accidents related to Diwali celebrations. The Fire Department reported four major incidents across the State, with three occurring in Hyderabad. While there were no casualties, the accidents caused significant property damage.

In Himayatnagar, a fire broke out in an apartment on the fourth floor when a burning diya (earthen lamp) was left unattended in a flat. The residents of the building evacuated in panic, while firefighters battled the blaze for an hour, eventually extinguishing it with the help of three fire engines. A fire official reported that the flat was completely gutted, and the incident left the residents shaken.

In Secunderabad, a firecracker landed on a warehouse storing electrical appliances on RP Road, sparking a fire that required three fire engines to control. Fortunately, no one was inside the warehouse, preventing a potential tragedy.

Another fire erupted in a furniture shop in Saroornagar, leading to extensive damage. Four fire engines were deployed to bring the blaze under control. In Jagtial town, a garments shop was also gutted in a fire after a stray firecracker landed in the shop. The quick action of fire service personnel helped prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring businesses.

Officials vow action against negligence

Authorities have launched investigations into each of the fire incidents to determine the exact causes and potential negligence involved. Officials stated that they would take action against individuals found responsible for any lapses in safety. They also urged the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when handling firecrackers and diyas during festive celebrations.

A need for public awareness on firecracker safety

As Hyderabad grapples with the aftermath of these incidents, medical professionals and authorities are emphasizing the importance of safety awareness around firecrackers.

Dr Modini Pandharpurkar advised, “People need to be more aware of the risks associated with firecrackers, not only for their safety but for the safety of others around them. Injuries to the eyes and face can be particularly devastating and require urgent attention.”

Hospitals and fire services remain on high alert as the city anticipates additional cases in the coming days.
