HYDERABAD: Commuters in Banjara Hills area were left stunned early on Friday morning when they found a badly damaged bright red Porsche Taycan lying on the side of the road, after it had slammed into the KBR Park railing.
Neither did the Rs 2.5 crore car have a number plate, nor was the driver anywhere in sight.
Only after passersby informed the police did the officers start an investigation and tracked down the driver young businessman Utsav Kumar Chaterjee from the chassis number.
The accident occurred when Chaterjee, 30, lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve next to the Basavatarakam Indo- American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute at around 5.30 am on Friday.
Officers told TOI it was sheer chance that a major disaster was averted.
The pavement that the car initially hit before slamming into the railing is normally packed with homeless people and attendants of patients being treated at the cancer hospital. Luckily it was empty at the time of the accident.
Chaterjee emerged unhurt from the crash because he was wearing a seatbelt and the airbags deployed effectively.
He, however, fled from the spot. He was later tested for alcohol consumption, but the result came back negative.
Couple drove Porsche without number plate
Police officials said the luxury car was gifted to Chaterjee’s wife by her father a few months ago and both husband and wife had been driving it without a registered number plate.
Chaterjee has been booked for damaging public property, abetment to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and rash and negligent driving, said police.
Officials added that Chaterjee had a tiff with his wife over a family issue on Thursday night after which he left home in the Porsche at around 11.30 pm.
He met a couple of his friends at Film Nagar, gave them sweets for Diwali, and spent some time with them. He met with the accident while returning home.
