Ioniq 5 goes on a road trip; Real-world range & performance experience

The Ioniq 5 handled everything with ease, and we were impressed with its performance and efficiency the entire trip.

Yellow! Hope you are having a great day. This is my first post on Team-BHP.

In October 3rd week, we took a road trip from Bengaluru to Chennai to attend a wedding. We saw this trip as the perfect opportunity to test the range and performance of our Ioniq 5. During the trip, we experienced varied weather conditions, heavy traffic, and long highway stretches. The Ioniq 5 handled everything with ease, and we were impressed with its performance and efficiency the entire trip.

Here’s a breakdown of our experience:

Starting Point: Electronic City, Bengaluru
Destination: Courtyard by Marriott, Chennai
Total Distance: 335 km
Total Battery Consumption: ~60%
Total Break Time: 70 minutes (split between two breaks)
Tire Pressure: 34 PSI at the start, increased to 36-37 PSI during the drive
Passengers: 3
Luggage: boot filled with 2 medium suitcases and 4 other smaller bags

Weather Conditions:
Pleasant at the start
Heavy rainfall in the second leg
High temperatures in the final leg

Traffic Conditions:
Heavy traffic in the first 80 km
Smooth highways for most part
Congested traffic entering Chennai

Leg 1: Bengaluru to Kuppam (133.7 km)

We started the journey with tire pressure set at 34 PSI across all tires. The first 80 km was slow due to heavy Bengaluru traffic. We hit the road at 6:40AM in the morning. I used the regenerative braking system to make sure we used battery power efficiently. I think the Ioniq 5 regen is very powerful and efficient. Once we got past Hosur, the highway opened up, and the car cruised effortlessly. The drive was smooth and quiet. Most of the run was at level 0, regen, except when in traffic.

  • Travel Time: 2 hours 35 minutes
  • Top Speed: 106 km/h
  • Average Speed: 57 km/h
  • Battery Usage: From 99% to 79% (20% consumption)
  • Energy Consumption: 11.2 kWh/100 km
  • Tire Pressure: 34 PSI at the start, increased to around 36 PSI due to driving
  • Idle Time: 10 minutes (due to traffic signals and brief stops)
  • After covering 133.7 km, we took a 35-minute break at Kuppam to stretch our legs. We noticed a Statiq 60kW fast charger at Ahmedia, but since this was a range test, we decided not to use it. By this point, the car had used only 20% of the battery, showing impressive efficiency.

Leg 2: Kuppam to Wallajah (94.6 km)

The second leg had a much smoother drive with less traffic, though the weather took a turn as we encountered heavy rain. Despite the rain, the Ioniq 5’s handling remained stable, and the car was a pleasure to drive even in wet conditions. We enjoyed the panoramic view through the moonroof in the rain. What a sight! Had fun.

  • Travel Time: 1 hour 23 minutes
  • Top Speed: 114 km/h
  • Average Speed: 71 km/h
  • Battery Usage: Approx. 15% (around 64% charge remaining)
  • Energy Consumption: 13.6 kWh/100 km
  • Tire Pressure: Between 36-37 PSI during this leg
  • Weather: Heavy rain
  • We made a 35-minute stop at Wallajah to take a quick break before the final leg of the trip. Ate some amazing Dosa, Idly, Sambar and Chutney

Leg 3: Wallajah to Courtyard by Marriott, Chennai (108 km)

The final leg of our trip was marked by very high temperatures and heavy traffic as we entered Chennai. Despite the increased heat and slow-moving urban traffic, the Ioniq 5 performed efficiently. The AC was set to 21°C, keeping us cool inside, while the car’s eco-friendly systems helped manage energy usage. The regenerative braking system continued to conserve energy, even in stop-and-go traffic.

  • Travel Time: 2 hours 39 minutes
  • Top Speed: 122 km/h
  • Average Speed: 42 km/h
  • Battery Usage: 24% (39% battery remaining on arrival)
  • Range Left: 223 km estimated range left without AC, 201km with AC
  • Tire Pressure: Around 36-37 PSI
  • Traffic: Heavy congestion entering Chennai
  • We arrived at the Courtyard by Marriott with 39% battery remaining and an estimated 223 km of range left, completing the 335 km journey using about 60% of the battery.

Conclusion:

Without cutting any corners, running the AC, Android Auto, and all other electronics, the car maintained its energy efficiency and comfort throughout.

I think I have a reasonably efficient way of driving, and this has helped extract a real-world range of 530–560 km on highways and 570 km in the city. This car gives you that opportunity to drive closer to 500 kms in one full charge. The trick might be in driving smoothly and not getting carried away with the decent power that the car offers. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast!!

Wishing you all a happy Diwali and have a lovely holiday season!!
