Hyderabad: The Telangana government has unveiled plans to construct the world’s tallest statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Bapu Ghat in Hyderabad, a site of profound historical significance where Gandhi’s ashes were once immersed, as per reports. This landmark project forms a core element of the state’s ambitious Musi River rejuvenation initiative, which aims to beautify the river’s surroundings and cultivate a spirit of peace and brotherhood through Gandhian ideals.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is the lead of this transformative project. Reddy has talked about the need for public engagement and expert consultations to shape the statue’s design, height, and posture. By encouraging citizens to contribute suggestions, the project aims to create a symbol that resonates deeply with people’s sentiments toward the Mahatma’s legacy.

Current Tallest Gandhi Statue Is In…

Currently, the tallest Gandhi statue in the world stands at 72 feet in Patna, with another prominent eight-foot statue in Texas depicting him during the historic Dandi March. The proposed Hyderabad statue will aim to surpass these.

A Broader Vision for Peace and Learning

Beyond the statue, the Telangana government plans to establish a Gandhian Ideology Centre, which will serve as a hub for promoting the Mahatma’s teachings on peace, non-violence, and brotherhood. Complementing this will be a new Gandhi Ashram, envisioned as an educational centre where students and visitors can learn about ethics, values, and the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in today’s world. Together, these institutions are expected to foster a deeper cultural and historical appreciation within the community.

Infrastructure Enhancements for a Sustainable Future

Infrastructure upgrades are also central to this project. The government has announced plans for a bridge-cum-barrage at the confluence of the Esa and Musi rivers, aimed at improving water treatment and quality in the region. This addition promises ecological benefits and aligns with the broader vision of a revitalised, sustainable riverfront that citizens can take pride in.
