Telangana Government Targets Defence Land for Ambitious Musi Riverfront Development | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: After successfully acquiring 180 acres of defence land for the proposed elevated corridors within Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) limits a few months ago, Telangana govt is now seeking defence land for the Musi rejuvenation project.
Initially, the govt estimated that 70 acres would be needed for the development of Musi riverfront near Bapughat. But, proposals are being revised now with a change in Musi development plans.
Since chief minister A Revanth Reddy is keen on developing Bapughat and the surrounding areas by installing the world’s tallest Gandhi statue, setting up an education hub, a London Eye-like facility and other recreational facilities in about 200 acres, the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (MRDCL) authorities said they may need more than 100 acres of defence land. The state govt is believed to have written to the ministry of defence for the defence land for the Musi rejuvenation project and offered land-to-land compensation.
The municipal authorities are hopeful of a positive reply from the MoD as the land is being asked for a public purpose.
“The govt is looking at the MoD land at Bapughat and other places required for the road infrastructure project in the city. In lieu of that land, the state govt is willing to give Research Centre Imarat (RCI) land at Raviryal mandal in Rangareddy district. RCI land of 2,460 acres belongs to the state govt and was given to MoD on a lease a few decades ago,” sources in MRDCL told TOI.
A joint survey was conducted by MRDCL, revenue and defence officials, who identified requirement for 70 acres of defence land. Interestingly, Bapughat and surrounding areas along the Musi have more defence land than private land. Bapughat is spread over 24 acres, with another 20 acres up to Musi river. As the CM wants to take up the Musi project upstream of Bapughat towards both Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, land parcels are being identified, a source said. In the upstream, there is another eight acres between Tippukhan bridge and Tapovan, he said.
“Proposals for Musi development catchment area, 150 metres from the maximum flood area, have been prepared, and if needed, it will be reduced to 100 metres if any important defence installations come in the way,” a senior official said.
In June, CM Revanth met defence minister Rajnath Singh and sought 2,450 acres of defence land in Hyderabad in various places for the construction of flyovers, elevator corridors, metro rail and road expansion. At that time, the state govt had offered 2,460 acres of RCI land to MoD. Govt officials said Rajnath Singh had responded positively.
