Hyderabad: The state health department is planning to set up 72 trauma care centres, modelled after Tamil Nadu’s trauma care system. A team of officers from Telangana recently visited Chennai to study Tamil Nadu’s model.
Tamil Nadu’s govt offers free emergency treatment at both govt and private hospitals, covering costs up to Rs 1 lakh per patient for cases like accidents, strokes, and suicide attempts.
This system aims to ensure patients receive treatment within the critical golden hour, increasing their chances of survival. Inspired by this model, health officials are considering establishing trauma care centres in district hospitals, medical colleges, area hospitals, and primary health centres. They are also exploring the inclusion of this trauma care package under the Arogyasree scheme, using hospitals already empanelled with Arogyasree and equipped with specialty services.
“Delayed payments to hospitals treating Arogyasree patients, coupled with private hospitals’ reliance on emergency cases as revenue sources, add to these doubts. Many private hospitals opposed similar measures in other states, citing financial concerns,” said an official.
