
Vijayawada: In a first-of-its-kind judgment in Andhra Pradesh under the newly implemented criminal laws in India, the judicial first-class magistrate court of Kanigiri, presided over by judge K Bharat Chandra, sentenced a theft case accused to community service on Friday.
The accused, identified as Pola Ankayya (28), from Kanigiri, was ordered to participate in community service from Nov 2 to Dec 31. As per the judgment, Ankayya is required to clean main junctions and streets of Kanigiri from 6 am to 9 am every day under the supervision of the Kanigiri municipal commissioner. Specific directives were also issued to both the accused and the municipal commissioner, ensuring the community service is properly executed under police guidance.
On Oct 13, Ankayya allegedly entered the premises of a temple near Doruvu Bazaar in Kanigiri around 4:30 pm while devotees were engaged in prayers. He reportedly stole three brass vessels from the temple and fled the scene. Shortly after the theft, a police team nabbed Ankayya with the stolen items in his possession. Following the investigation led by Kanigiri SI T Sreeram, a case was filed.
