GVMC Launches Major Pothole Repair Initiative in Vizag: 2,100 of 4,441 Potholes Fixed | Vijayawada News

Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has begun rectifying the damaged roads in Vizag city.
Of the 4,441 potholes identified, approximately 2,100 were repaired at a cost of roughly Rs 6.9 crore. Concurrently, to mitigate the threat of waterborne diseases, primarily diarrhoea, the GVMC is relocating water pipelines that traverse the city’s drains. This measure aims to prevent the contamination of drinking water supplies by sewage, a common cause of diarrhoea outbreaks reported elsewhere in the state over the past four months. The GVMC identified 398 such intersections and has so far diverted 375 pipelines.
State municipal administration and urban development minister P Narayana said that potholes on all roads are being filled to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent inconvenience to drivers.
“This initiative was undertaken in accordance with chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s directives under the 100-day action plan. Road repairs are ongoing across the state. In Visakhapatnam alone, 2,009 out of the 4,441 identified potholes were repaired, with the remaining potholes under repair,” said Narayana.
GVMC commissioner Dr P Sampath Kumar said that the drinking water supplied daily to the residents of Visakhapatnam is thoroughly purified and free from contamination. The commissioner recently reviewed the quality of water supplied from the Burma Colony pump house.
“The GVMC is supplying approximately 300 MLD of purified drinking water, with around 2,500 chlorine tests conducted daily at individual taps, public taps, reservoirs, and pump houses by the water supply department and associated agencies. Plans are underway to introduce mobile testing units to facilitate water quality tests anywhere in the city, which will help in the immediate detection of any contamination,” said Dr Kumar.
The commissioner added that the GVMC has already relocated 375 of the 398 identified water pipelines that intersect with drainage channels, with the remaining 23 pipelines to be relocated soon.
“Furthermore, around 25 to 30 pipeline leaks are detected and repaired daily. Proactive cleaning measures are regularly implemented to prevent contamination from overflowing sewage manholes and underground drains. The GVMC is committed to providing purified water to prevent waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, and as part of an ongoing process, the GVMC’s water supply department is taking extra precautions in water supply for the residents,” Dr Kumar said.
