My Jimny crosses 6000km: Took it for a soft-roading drive over Diwali

Of all the senior citizens in the family, my 90 year old grandfather is the only one who can get in the Jimny. That too without help.

BHPian blueberry recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

It’s been a quiet few months with the Jimny. Been doing all the mundane day-to-day duties.
Nothing at all to report.

  • As a reader – mundane & boring.
  • As a driver – it’s still got that character & the smile of your face every time you drive it.

Inspite of sharing duties with others in the garage, & I making a conscious effort to rotate the drive; the Jimny has covered 6000Kms in the past 6 months. Seems like the Jimny is the one picked for anywhere with poor roads / parking. (Those are dime a dozen these days)

Finally got around to taking the Jimny out for a bit of soft-roading over Diwali break. It’s much more at home off the road, than on one.

Came across this stretch of road with 1-1.5ft water flowing over the road:

People have cut corners by installing access roads over canals, without accounting for the path of water flow. In multiple places water was using the tarred road as the way downstream to village ponds

Of all the senior citizens in the family, my 90 year old grandfather is the only one who can get in the Jimny (with no help that too). He was riding shotgun & pointing me to these spots.

He refers to the Jimny as the spiritual successor to his FIL’s WW2 Jeep (in a good way). The others in the family refer to the Jimny with much less glamour; terming it the “dog-car”. Seems like the WW2 Jeep was the designated dog career for my great-grand parents.

The tractor had a leak with its auxiliary hydraulic fluid system. Power steering, and Power take off stopped working. It was spilling hydraulic fluid all over freshly tilled soil. Had to shut down the engine. Jimny to the rescue.

Probably time to get recovery tow ropes. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, I’m afraid the mental comfort it affords will make me go overboard off-road. Fashioned a tow rope with thick ropes at the farm.

How the tables turn!

Sorting out the auxiliary fuel line on the tractor.
