IIM Vizag outshines second generation IIMs in NIRF ranks

Visakhapatnam: The Union govt established seven new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in 2015 and 2016. Among these, IIM Visakhapatnam (26th rank) has emerged as the top performer in the management category of the NIRF 2024 rankings, which were released on Monday.
IIM Visakhapatnam has outscored some of the second-generation IIMs, such as IIM Tiruchirappalli, which was placed 27th in the 2024 rankings.
IIM Visakhapatnam has improved its ranking by three positions, securing the 26th spot this year, compared to 29th in 2023 and 33rd in 2022.
Speaking to TOI, IIM Visakhapatnam director Prof M Chandrasekhar said that IIMV aims to ascend to the top 20 institutions in the management category.
“I am pleased that IIM Visakhapatnam, at NIRF rank 26, has not only improved its position by three ranks in 2024 compared to 2023 but also continues to maintain its lead among all new-generation IIMs. Full credit goes to our faculty, students, and staff for their high competence and commitment. Our governing bodies and institute committees have provided strong encouragement and invaluable guidance. We are also grateful to the central and state govts for their unwavering support. We sincerely thank all our stakeholders who, with their continued patronage, are partners in our progress,” said professor Chandrasekhar.
IIM Visakhapatnam commenced operations in 2015 with around 50 students in its flagship PGP programme.
The institute admitted nearly 340 students in 2024. The premier business school has introduced a ‘start-up and innovation policy’.
“Under this initiative, 1% of the expenditure budget will be allocated towards an innovation fund to encourage students to venture into entrepreneurship and provide them with seed funding, prototype grants, and other support. IIM Visakhapatnam has emerged as a sought-after source for capacity-building by public and private sector enterprises,” added Prof Chandrasekhar.
