Visakhapatnam: Heavy to very heavy rains (seven to 18 cm) lashed several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh on Friday night and Saturday as the low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression. The downpour led to severe waterlogging on the roads, thus affecting the traffic movements in various parts of the state on Saturday. Several districts announced a holiday for schools.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday at isolated places in Kurnool, NTR, Palnadu and Nandyal districts and heavy rains in parts of the ASR, Eluru, West Godavari, East Godavari, Kakinada, Guntur, Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, Anantapur and Konaseema districts.
The well-marked low-pressure area over west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal off north A P and south Odisha coasts moved west-north-westwards, intensified into a depression on Saturday. It is likely to move further west-north-westwards and cross north AP and adjoining south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam. Under the influence of the system, the rainfall activity will continue Sunday. Director of IMD-Amaravati S Stella said that heavy to very heavy rains and extremely heavy rains lashed parts of Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, NTR, West Godavari, East Godavari, Eluru and Konaseema districts on Saturday. Parts of few other districts also experienced heavy rains, she added.
According to the IMD, Masulipatnam in Krishna district and Vijayawada in NTR district recorded the highest rainfall of 18 cm each in the state between Aug 30 (Friday 8.30 am) and Aug 31 (Saturday 8.30 am), followed by 17 cm rainfall in Gudivada (Krishna), 15 cm in Kaikaluru (Eluru), 14 cm in Narsapuram (West Godavari), 13 cm in Amaravati (Guntur), 12 cm in Vijayawada Airport (NTR), 11 cm each in Mangalagiri (Guntur), Nandigama (NTR), Bheemavaram (West Godavari), nine centimetre rainfall each in Palakoderu (West Godavari), Tennali (Guntur), Tiruvuru (NTR), Guntur and Proddutur ( YSR Kadapa), eight centimetre each in Eluru, Nuzvid (Eluru), Athampet (Palnadu), seven centimetre each in Tadepalligudem (West Godavari), Repalle (Bapatla), Kunnavaram (ASR), Karamchedu (Bapatla), Chapad and Jammalamadugu (YSR district) during this period.

The IMD issued an orange alert for seven districts, including Ernakulam and Idukki, and a yellow alert for other regions except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. The next few days may bring landslides, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions. Residents are advised to follow local guidelines and exercise caution. Significant rainfall has already been recorded in various locations, with warnings extending into Sunday.
