Vijayawada: A man and his son were arrested in Prakasam district for trying to extort 10 lakh from a person. The accused claimed to be cops from the DGP’s office and demanded the amount to drop alleged corruption charges against the victim.
The accused, identified as Perusomula Veeranaarayana (30) and his father Perusomula Satyanarayana, both residents of Adanki town in Bapatla district, were arrested near Koshtala Center on NH-16 on Wednesday. Police said they have a history of similar frauds, with cases pending in Hyderabad’s Rachakonda commissionerate and One Town police station in Vizianagaram.
The case stems from a complaint lodged by Bezawada Sriram Murthy, a resident of Doddavarapadu village, who alleged that the father-son duo had extorted 10,000 from him by threatening to implicate him in a corruption case. The fraudsters claimed to be from the DGP’s office and demanded 10 lakh to ensure that no charges would be filed against him.
Murthy was accused of embezzling 7.5 lakh from his local panchayat and illegally acquiring land. The fraudsters exploited these allegations to pressurise him into paying the extortion amount. Upon receiving the complaint, police registered a case and arrested the accused. They also recovered the 10,000 that the accused had extorted from the complainant. Police are looking for another individual, Mulluri Murali from Doddavarapadu village, who is also involved in the case. The accused were presented before the special mobile court in Ongole and remanded in custody.
