This year’s festive season gave a much-needed boost to the Indian EV market in October. The EV segment, which had been witnessing consistent sales declines over the last two months, registered the highest monthly sales of 217,716 units. According to Vahan data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this is the second time in 2024 that EV sales have crossed the 2 lakh mark, pushing total EV registrations past the 6 million milestone.
Considering the growth of the EV segment, OEMs such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata, Toyota, and Honda are preparing a slew of new electric cars targeting the mass market. In the next 3-4 months, we will see the launch of three midsize electric SUVs from India’s top car manufacturers – Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Mahindra. Let’s take a look at these upcoming midsize electric SUVs.
Upcoming Electric SUVs in India
Mahindra BE 6e
In the company’s product lineup, the new Mahindra BE 6e will sit above the XUV400 EV. Its production-ready version will officially debut on 26th November 2024, soon to be followed by its market launch. The SUV’s final model is likely to measure 4370mm in length, 1900mm in width, and 1635mm in height, just like its concept. It will sit on a 2775mm wheelbase. The twin-screen setup and wraparound element extending from its dashboard to the center console will be retained from the concept. Specifications are not available at this point; however, the Mahindra BE 6e is expected to come with two battery packs – 60kWh and 79kWh – and two drivetrain options: RWD and AWD. The larger battery version is likely to offer a range of around 450km on a single charge.
Hyundai Creta EV
The Hyundai Creta EV launch is set for the first month of 2025, with prices expected to be announced during its public debut at the second edition of the Bharat Mobility Show. The powertrain setup of the electric Creta is expected to include a 45kWh battery and an electric motor, delivering a maximum power of 138bhp and 255Nm of torque. Its range could be around 350km or more. Hyundai will incorporate some EV-specific changes to its exterior and interior. The latest spy images reveal that the electric SUV will feature ‘CRETA Electric’ embossing on the seat upholstery along with a new circular three-spoke steering wheel. Its interior layout and features, however, will be similar to the ICE counterpart.
Maruti and Vitara
The Suzuki e Vitara recently made its global debut in Milan, Italy. It is essentially the production-ready version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX concept that was unveiled at the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. Suzuki’s Gujarat-based manufacturing facility will serve as the global production hub for the e Vitara. The electric SUV is set to go on sale in India in March 2025. The Maruti e Vitara marks the debut of the brand’s new ‘HEARTECT-e’ born-electric platform, claimed to provide high-voltage protection and a spacious interior due to its short overhangs. The new Maruti electric SUV will offer 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs, paired with a single electric motor. The larger 61kWh battery will also be available with a dual-motor setup and the e-AllGrip AWD system.
