Man vandalises temple, gets thrashed by locals

Hyderabad: A man who attempted to vandalise an idol at a temple in Jukal village in Shamsabad was caught by locals and thrashed on Saturday night. Shamshabad police said that the incident took place at the Chowdamma-Somanna temple in Jukal at around 8 pm.
The accused trespassed into the temple and committed the offence. After entering the temple, he first removed the ornaments from the idol and then attempted to vandalise it. A portion of the idol was damaged. Meanwhile, a few locals who were visiting the temple spotted the accused. They immediately caught him and alerted the temple authorities. After learning about the incident, the local villagers rushed to the spot and started to attack the accused. In this incident, the accused suffered injuries.
One of the villagers who was at the spot alerted the police about the offence in the temple. Realising the sensitive situation, the patrolling police shifted the accused into the police vehicle. However, agitated villagers tried to stop the police vehicle. A few of them even pelted stones at the vehicle.
When police questioned the accused at the police station, he disclosed his name as Salim, hailing from Jalgaon district in Maharashtra. “The accused, during the questioning, has been giving inconsistent replies. It looks like he had a deliberate intention to do cause vandalism. After registering a case, he was produced before the magistrate and has been sent to judicial remand,” sources in Cyberabad police told TOI.
When the accused’s antecedents were verified, police came to know that Salim was previously involved in an arson case in Maharashtra. A few days ago, a similar incident took place in Shamshabad, but the accused was mentally unsound and was later shifted to Govt Hospital for Mental Care in Erragadda.
