Visakhapatnam: In a remarkable turn of events, a newborn, who was initially presumed dead, made an unexpected recovery at King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam.
The incident occurred on Friday night when a pregnant woman from Vizag city was admitted to the KGH gynaecology ward for a scheduled delivery. At around 9 pm, a caesarean section was performed, and the baby was delivered.
However, the baby showed no signs of life after birth. Despite extensive efforts by doctors and nurses throughout the night, including resuscitation attempts, there was no visible movement from the newborn. By 4 AM the following morning on Saturday, the doctors declared the baby dead. Hospital records were updated to reflect the baby’s death.
The family, devastated by the loss, made arrangements for the body to be taken home. An ambulance was prepared for this purpose. But in a dramatic twist, the father noticed a slight movement in the baby. He immediately alerted the medical staff, and the baby was rushed back to the hospital.
Upon closer examination, doctors found that the newborn had a pulse and was showing signs of life. The baby was swiftly placed in an incubator and given further treatment. As of now, the baby is reported to be in stable condition and is under close observation in the neonatal intensive care unit.
KGH Superintendent, Dr P Sivananda, said that such incidents are extremely rare. “Our gynaecologists and paediatricians are working together to monitor the baby’s progress closely. We have also initiated an internal inquiry into the events surrounding this case to understand how the initial diagnosis of death was made,” he said.
