BC Commission Pressed to Increase Reservation Quota Beyond 50% in Telangana | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: The first public hearing by the newly constituted dedicated commission for BCs was held on Monday. Representatives of sub-castes of various backward classes urged the commission to impress upon courts and central govt the need to enhance BC quota by breaching the 50% cap on reservations.
Joint action committee of backward classes’ state chairman Thirunahari Seshu said that of the over 132 BC sub-castes in Telangana, 100 sub-castes have not had any political representation. The BC quota should be fixed after categorising them into A, B, C, D, and E groups, he said. Reservations should be fixed based on political and other backwardness, he added.
“The dedicated BC Commission should ensure that a scientifically collected data of backward classes, mainly of ‘sanchara jatulu’ and most backward classes, should be placed before courts to seek permission to enhance BC quota beyond 50% limit. Also, the state govt should pass a resolution based on the empirical data and send it to the Centre to pass a Bill in Parliament,” said Seshu.
Dedicated BC commission chairman Busani Venkateshwara Rao told TOI that another public hearing will be held in the commission’s office in DSS Bhavan in Masab Tank on Tuesday.
“We plan to hold public hearings in the districts and a notification will be issued,” he said. On the other hand, existing BC commission chairman G Niranjan told TOI that the commission will resume its public hearings from Nov 18. It will have a larger role in deciding castes to be included or omitted from the BC list, upgrading or downgrading sub-castes from A, B, C, and D categories, and fixing quota for sub-castes in education and employment. “Data collected by us can be used by dedicated commission,” Niranjan said.
