Hyderabad: Cycle tracks in Hyderabad have been rendered unusable due to issues such as encroachment by street vendors, especially in areas like Mettuguda and Habsiguda toward Tarnaka. These tracks meant to encourage cycling, are often blocked and face issues due to poor planning and lack of monitoring. They lack proper connectivity, blocked by street vendors and have become parking areas for metro commuters in some areas.
The cycle track in Habsiguda, stretching from Mettuguda to Tarnaka, is affected by these problems. “These tracks were meant for cyclists, but they are hardly used. In some places, they are now used as parking spots instead of serving cyclists,” shared a resident.
“The cycle tracks will be misused if not properly designed. However, if there is connectivity between schools and residential areas, they will be used more effectively,” said Selvan, the Bicycle Mayor of Hyderabad.
“Plans are in place to improve traffic management from the Usman Institute towards Tarnaka, reintroducing signal points and improving connectivity for the cycle track,” said a GHMC official.
B.V.S. Devraju, an executive engineer at Secunderabad GHMC, assured Deccan Chronicle that a full inspection would be conducted to address traffic and footpath issues. Once the inspection is complete, a detailed report will be prepared and necessary action will be taken.
