Freedom fighter Rampilla Narasayamma passes away at 99

Vijayawada: The nation mourns the loss of freedom fighter Rampilla Narasayamma, who passed away aged 99 on Wednesday. Known for her fearless spirit, Narasayamma, alongside her husband Sardar Rampilla Suryanarayana, played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) during India’s struggle for independence. Together, they engaged in the revolutionary act of making bombs to challenge the British rule and were arrested multiple times under the infamous Bejawada bomb conspiracy.
Narasayamma’s life reflected her dedication to the freedom struggle and to her country. Her efforts were not limited to armed resistance; she later embraced Gandhian principles, believing in the power of peaceful reform to shape India’s future. She honoured Mahatma Gandhi by constructing a Gandhi temple in Vijayawada, where she propagated his teachings and encouraged others to pursue the ideals of truth and nonviolence.
Even after independence, Narasayamma remained committed to national causes, participating in the liberation struggle in Goa. Remarkably, she gave birth to her son, Rampilla Jayaprakash, while in prison for her role in this struggle. Later, as a member of the central govt’s Ministry of Home Affairs Advisory Council, she advocated for the welfare of fellow freedom fighters, playing a vital role in securing pensions and facilities for them.
Narasayamma’s contributions were recognised many times, with honours from dignitaries including former Presidents Pranab Mukherjee and Ram Nath Kovind, and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu. Her presence at numerous national events inspired generations with her speeches on courage, freedom, and patriotism.
As news of her passing spread, many gathered at her residence to pay their respects, honouring her enduring legacy and the sacrifices she made for India’s freedom.
