Hyderabad: Staff at the State Bank of India’s Clock Tower Branch in Mahabubnagar district successfully thwarted an attempt by cybercriminals to steal 4.2 lakh from a customer and rescued him from a digital arrest scam.
On Thursday, when the customer arrived at the bank to complete an RTGS transaction for the large amount, employee M Anitha noticed his unusual behavior. He appeared visibly distressed and struggled to explain the purpose of the transfer. Sensing something was wrong, Anitha quickly escalated the situation to chief manager Shushma Indla.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the customer had fallen victim to a digital arrest scam via a WhatsApp video call. The scammers had manipulated him into believing he was under arrest. The bank immediately froze the account and alerted local police, who responded within 10 minutes. A case was subsequently registered against the fraudsters, and a probe is currently underway.tnn
