Since Suriya’s ambitious pan-India film Kanguva released, the loud BGM by Devi Sri Prasad (DSP) has become the most talked-about topic. Social media is buzzing about how unnecessarily loud the background score is.

Resul Pookutty, Oscar winning sound designer from the Malayalam film industry, shared a post on Instagram. He posted a picture with Suriya and included a text that reads: “Kanguva is the loudest film in theaters, and the excessive volume detracts from the experience.”

He wrote, “A friend of mine, a re-recording mixer, sent me this clip… It is disheartening to see a review about sound in our popular films like this. Our craft and artistry are caught up in the loudness war… Who is to blame?! The sound guy? Or the innumerable fixes made at the last moment to satisfy all insecurities? It’s high time our fraternity puts its foot down and says things loud and clear. No film will have repeat value if the audience walks out with a headache!”

This loud BGM trend started with KGF 2, with some filmmakers under the illusion that the louder the BGM, the better.

This trend isn’t limited to big-star films; a recent film from Nani, Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, follows a similar BGM pattern. No matter the situation, the BGM is just loud, but the good thing is, it hasn’t been trolled like Kanguva.
