Govt receives 8.3k land grab complaints

Vijayawada: The state govt has received 8,305 land grabbing complaints, minister for revenue, stamps and registrations, Anagani Satya Prasad, told the legislative council on Friday. He added that they have identified 7,873 acres of land under illegal registration. The minister said an investigation is ongoing into allegations of grabbing lands originally assigned to BC, SC, and ST communities.
“During the tenure of YSRCP, over 1.36 acres were converted to freehold. Scrutiny is ongoing to decide the veracity of these transactions. Officials have found that out of 25,276 acres of assigned lands sold and registered in the state in the last five years, violations have been found in 7,837 acres,” he said.
Satya Prasad further said that the state govt is introducing a new law with stringent punishments to prevent land grabbing.
“Those involved in land grabbing will face jail term between 10 and 14 years under the new legislation,” he said, adding that the govt is planning to set up special courts to deal with cases to be registered under the new Act.
“There are provisions to confiscate the assets of land grabbers if their assets are found to be disproportionate to their sources of income,” said the minister.
