Hyderabad man trafficked to Myanmar, tortured for refusing to engage in online scams

HYDERABAD: A 36-year-old job aspirant from Hyderabad was trafficked to Myanmar after being promised a job and is allegedly being tortured by a company there as he refused to engage in internet frauds as directed. His family has urged Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to rescue Shaik Ashraf from the grip of the company and facilitate his return home to India.
MBT leader and social welfare advocate Amjed Ullah Khan tweeted to the Ministry of External Affairs about the plight of Shaik Ashraf, who is reportedly being physically tortured after his refusal to be part of the scam operations.
Shaik Ashraf of Afsar Khan Colony, Langar House, Golconda went to Dubai, UAE, in August 2023 in the hope of finding a job. It was there that a person from a travel agency, allegedly run by a Chinese person, promised him a job in an IT company in Thailand.
Ashraf accepted the offer and on August 29 flew from Dubai to Bangkok, Thailand, to take up the job. However, in Thailand, he was received by another agent and taken to Mae Sot in Thailand, and from there he was trafficked into Myanmar by boat.
Upon reaching the place, Ashraf was asked to work in a company that was carrying out operations to scam people on the internet and deprive them of their money by cheating. As he refused to do it, he was reportedly being tortured. He conveyed this to his family on the phone.
“Rescue him as soon as possible. When I spoke to him, he told me that nearly 60-70 youth from Telangana and other states are stuck in the same company and are also unable to come back,” Amjed Ullah Khan said.
