Star Indian batter Virat Kohli, who will be a key player for the Rohit Sharma-led side in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia, underwent scans for a mystery injury. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday (November 15), the nature of Kohli’s injury is still unclear, but a source with direct knowledge of the matter said that he did have scans on Thursday.

However, despite scans, Kohli participated in the intra-squad match at WACA Stadium in Perth on Friday and scored 15 runs before being caught at the second slip.

The 36-year-old right-handed batter who led India to a 2-1 series win during the 2018-19 tour of Australia is struggling with form these days. In the three matches of the last series played against New Zealand, he was only able to score 93 runs.

Despite his poor form, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has backed Kohli to come up with a big show in the upcoming 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“Well, the king is back in his territory,” Shastri said on the ICC Review show. “That’s all I will tell the doubters. When you’ve earned that title after your exploits in Australia, it will be on your (opponent’s) mind when you go out to bat.”

Kohli’s record in Australia

Kohli travelled to Australia with the Indian team for the first time in 2011-12, and in 13 matches played so far on the Australian soil, he has scored 1352 runs. He scored his maiden Test century (116 runs) in the first inning of the Adelaide Test played from January 24 to 28 in 2012, and during the next Test tour of Australia in 2014-15, he scored four centuries, two of which were again at the Adelaide Oval.

During the India tour of Australia in 2018-19, Kohli hammered 123 runs in the first inning of the Perth Test. The series opener of the upcoming five-match Test series is also scheduled to take place at the same venue from November 22 onwards.

Kohli played only in the series opener of the 2020-21 tour, but in his absence as well, India went to win two of the last three matches and seal the series with a scoreline of 2-1.
