Vijayawada: A heated session unfolded in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council as YSRCP members staged a protest following the chairman’s decision to reject their adjournment motion, which sought a discussion on the recent arrests of YSRCP social media activists.
Irrigation minister Nimmala Naidu condemned the YSRCP’s stance and criticised their support for individuals accused of using abusive language against YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s mother Vijayamma and sister YS Sharmila. Energy minister Gottipati Ravikumar expressed dismay that YSRCP members are using the Council’s platform to support individuals accused of cyber harassment. “It’s disgraceful that the YSRCP, instead of questioning issues of public concern, is defending those who promote abusive content against women,” he asserted.
Ravikumar further recalled past instances of insult directed at Chandrababu Naidu’s family, noting that YSRCP members, including Jagan, seemed dismissive at that time. He condemned the support shown by YSRCP members for individuals who harassed families of deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, home minister Anitha and others, labelling it an “evil act” that disrespects the council’s dignity.
In response to MLC Kalyani’s questions about welfare of govt employees, home minister Vangalapudi Anitha hit out at the YSRCP and accused the previous govt of neglecting public servants. She explained that during their tenure, employees faced irregular payments, delays in DA increments, and a lack of basic benefits. She pointed out that under the current coalition, govt employees are now receiving their salaries on time.
“Those who failed to pay salaries for five years are now questioning the new govt on welfare measures,” Anitha said and dismissed YSRCP’s criticism as ironic.
She further addressed leader of opposition Botsa Satyanarayana’s criticism over the budget allocation for free cylinder scheme. Botsa claimed that the govt’s provision covered only one cylinder, but Anitha countered, emphasising that funds would be released in instalments to provide three cylinders annually.
“Clear guidelines have been established for the distribution,” she said, noting that an initial allocation of 800 crore was made from the 2,500 crore budget set aside for this scheme. Meanwhile, BC welfare minister S Savitha highlighted the unprecedented support for backward classes in the budget and added that 39,007 crore has been set apart for their development. She responded to queries from MLCs Rajagolla Ramesh Yadav, Duvvada Srinivas, and Krishnaraghav Jayendra Bharat, affirming govt’s commitment to empowering backward communities through targeted welfare schemes.
