Visakhapatnam: Babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are termed preterm. Globally, prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 years, according to the World Health Organisation.
Premature babies require the highest level of special neonatal care. In this regard, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Visakhapatnam conducted a walkathon on the beach road on the occasion of World Prematurity Day 2024 on Sunday. Vizag South MLA Vamsi Krishna Srinivas and International President – Vasavi Clubs International R. Ravi Chandran graced the occasion.
Speaking on this occasion, the Vizag South MLA said that preterm babies can live a normal life with proper intervention at the right time.
Dr Bala Sri Latha Puli, consultant neonatologist and paediatrician, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Vizag, explained the medical procedures in treating premature babies.
“Premature babies require specialised care in neonatal intensive care units. We are equipped to provide the highest standards of specialised care to premature babies,” said Dr Bala Sri.
Dr Sathish V, consultant neonatologist and paediatrician, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Vizag, spoke about the advanced support systems involved in preterm baby care, including continuous renal replacement therapy, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation services, etc.
The length of hospital stay varies depending on the baby’s gestational age and medical conditions. Most premature babies remain in the NICU until they can maintain their body temperature, feed well, and breathe independently. After discharge, regular follow-up appointments help monitor their development and address any concerns. Some babies may need ongoing specialist care for specific health issues.
