Visakhapatnam: Vizag city has been grappling with traffic congestion for several years, and to address this, a plan was proposed to build 12 flyovers along the national highway that runs through the city. However, the state govt preliminarily decided to develop these flyovers in an integrated manner, aligning them with the proposed Visakhapatnam metro rail project.
The plan is to design the flyovers as part of a double-decker system. Given that the metro project is still awaiting approval from the Union govt and that the tendering process could take an additional year, the flyover project will be delayed until the metro plan is finalised.
The revised proposal is to construct a 14-km combined road flyover and metro corridor, consisting of eight flyovers, stretching from the Car Shed Junction to Thatichetlapalem. A separate 4-km flyover structure will cover two additional flyovers at Gajuwaka and the Vizag steel plant area.
Traffic congestion at key junctions along the highway, particularly at locations where flyovers are planned, is already severe. The delay in construction is likely to exacerbate the situation. While the proposed double-decker system could improve traffic flow and expedite the civil works for both the flyovers and the metro, the primary concern for Vizagites remains the recurring delays in infrastructure projects—especially given the past decade’s experience with prolonged delays in the metro project.
A feasibility report is being prepared for the combined road flyover and metro corridor. Officials from the Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. are working to finalise the report, which is expected in the next three months.
The revised estimates for the proposed 76.9 km metro rail project are pegged at 17,232 crore, reflecting an increase of nearly 3,000 crore from the previous estimate of 14,309 crore. In addition to preparing the feasibility report for the double-decker system that combines flyovers and metro rail, efforts are underway to seek approval from the Union govt for the phase-I project. The first phase covers 46.23 km at a completion cost of 11,498 crore. The Andhra Pradesh govt is pitching for 100% central govt funding, similar to the Kolkata East-West metro project. The second phase will involve the 30.67 km metro corridor from Kommadi to the under-construction Bhogapuram airport, with an estimated cost of Rs 5,734 crore.
Of the 12 proposed flyovers in Vizag, 10 are located within the metro network area. The remaining two flyovers are proposed at Duvvada Junction and Lankelapalem, which fall outside the scope of the metro project.
