New 8-Speed AT Gearbox for Kushaq, Slavia, Taigun, Virtus

Skoda Auto India will introduce a new 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox (AQ300) for its India 2.0 Project model lineup, which includes the Kushaq and Slavia. The same gearbox will also make its way to Volkswagen’s Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan in 2026. The new 8-speed automatic gearbox, sourced from Aisin, will replace the existing 6-speed automatic transmission.

Aisin’s new 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox ensures smoother transitions with closer-ratio steps between gears and results in less fuel wastage during acceleration and deceleration. This unit also promises better fuel efficiency and reduced carbon footprints. It will comply with the upcoming CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) III norms, which are likely to be enforced from 2027 to 2032.

Skoda has clarified its intention to localize production of the new automatic gearbox to reduce manufacturing costs. It is expected to enhance the overall drivability and fuel efficiency of the Skoda Kushaq, Slavia, and Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus. At present, these four models are available with a 1.0L TSI turbo petrol engine paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

In 2025, the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia will receive a midlife update with subtle cosmetic changes and feature upgrades. Test mules of the Kushaq have been spotted multiple timesrevealing some key details. The facelifted version of the SUV is likely to come with a newly designed grille, updated projector LED headlamps, slightly revised bumpers, new alloys, an updated tailgate, and Kodiaq-inspired connected taillamps.

With the midlife update, the Skoda Kushaq will also receive an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite, along with new seat upholstery and a few additional features. No changes are expected to be made to the engine. The new 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox is reported to be introduced 6 to 8 months after the arrival of the facelifted version.
