NTPC to set up 1 tonne per day green hydrogen plant using seawater, ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: NTPC’s R&D centre, NETRA, is setting up a 1 tonne per day (TPD) seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at NTPC Simhadri near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the company announced.

The project will use an innovative low-carbon desalination plant that processes seawater into hydrogen-grade water, utilizing waste heat from the thermal power plant’s flue gas.

Producing 1 kg of hydrogen requires 12–13 kg of purified water. To address water scarcity, the Government of India is prioritizing the development of technologies to produce hydrogen from low-grade water sources, including seawater and wastewater.

NTPC’s initiative aligns with this strategy, aiming to make hydrogen production more resource-efficient.

The project is being implemented by NTPC Green Energy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, which is working on multiple initiatives to meet the targets of the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
