Visakhapatnam: Work commenced on establishing a helicopter museum on Visakhapatnam beach road, featuring the UH-3H helicopter, which was recently de-inducted from the Indian Navy.
Personnel were seen assembling parts of the helicopter on Wednesday. VMRDA officials plan to complete the project in the next few months. The VMRDA is spending about Rs 2.2 crore on the new museum project.
Following the successful establishment of the TU-142 aircraft museum, the submarine museum, and the Sea Harrier museum, the VMRDA has been tasked with this new project. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has leased the land on beach road to the VMRDA for the helicopter museum.
The Indian Navy bid farewell to the UH-3H helicopter after 17 years of service during a de-induction ceremony held at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, in June. As the helicopter reached the end of its service life, it was decided that one UH-3H would be permanently displayed at a prominent location in Visakhapatnam to inspire future generations.
Navy officials recently handed over a commemorative plaque to the state govt, which was received by Visakhapatnam district officials to mark the transfer of the aircraft.
