Nizamabad: A shortage of funds and lack of coordination among officials have caused a 17-year delay in completing the underground drainage work (UGD) in Nizamabad.
The UGD project, initiated with an estimated cost of ₹246 crore, included the construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the Dubba and Yellammagutta areas. Initially, 60,000 households in the town were targeted for coverage under the UGD system. The design required two to three houses to connect to a single chamber for sewage flow.
While the Public Health Department completed the pipeline works and STPs, they failed to provide individual connections for households to release sewage. Consequently, many newly constructed house owners connected their drainage pipelines directly to the UGD chambers without official approval, leading to approximately 10,000 illegal UGD connections in the town.
Public Health officials have cited incomplete UGD works as the reason for being unable to provide individual pipeline connections. “We have set up 16,469 manholes in the town for sewage flow,” they stated, expressing hope that the ongoing Amrut scheme will help complete the UGD works.
