Completion of Vijayawada West Bypass Delayed by Controversial Power Line Dispute | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: The Vijayawada West Bypass road works remains incomplete as the shifting of 400 kV high-tension power lines has been a significant obstacle.
Farmers in Jakkampudi have been protesting for nearly a year, demanding changes in the alignment of these proposed power lines, which stalled progress on the much-anticipated project.
The Vijayawada West Bypass was designed to reduce heavy traffic within the city by creating a bypass route from Siddhartha Medical College in Chinna Avutupalli to NRI Medical College in Mangalagiri. This road will allow vehicles travelling from Kolkata to Chennai or Hyderabad to bypass Vijayawada entirely, offering major relief to the city’s traffic congestion.
While approximately 85% of the bypass construction is complete, delay in removing high-tension wires near Jakkampudi is hindering its progress. Though the public-sector AP Power Grid successfully rerouted some lines after consultations with farmers, private company Lanco is yet to shift its 400 kV lines. Farmers allege that the company plans to erect more towers, causing additional damage to their fields.
A committee of Jakkampudi farmers recently met Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) seeking resolution. Farmers’ leader Meesala Naga Malleswara Rao emphasised that AP Power Grid used vertical alignment to minimise damage but criticised the private company for failing to follow suit. Many farmers are prepared to intensify their protests if their demands are not addressed.
MP Srinivas assured the farmers that he would coordinate with Lanco, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the district administration to find a solution. He reiterated that efforts are underway to complete the bypass by March 2025. Also, construction of the bridge connecting Surayapalem near Gollapudi to Venkatapalem in Amaravati is nearing completion.
