Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh govt has granted its approval to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Union health ministry to establish a secondary-level chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) medical management centre at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in Visakhapatnam. This will be the first advanced facility of its kind in AP and Telangana.
A central team conducted a site inspection at VIMS in August and expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure and the proposed land for the CBRN facility. The centre is being developed under the central sector scheme for ‘health sector disaster preparedness and response’. The CBRN facility will feature ICU and isolation beds, decontamination treatment and shower facilities, as well as pre- and post-operation rooms dedicated to victims of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents.
VIMS director Dr K Rambabu said the centre, once operational, would provide the best of treatment to victims of such emergencies. “The proposal is highly significant for Visakhapatnam, which is a major industrial hub of the state. Victims can be quickly transported to this centre, which will not only address chemical accidents but also support biological emergencies, like the recent Covid-19 pandemic. It will have facilities to treat chemical, biological, and radiological emergencies. A separate building will be constructed in the VIMS premises to attend to nuclear emergencies under the project,” he said.
