Vijayawada: A gas cylinder explosion on Sunday claimed the life of a farmer, Amishetty Tulasinath (37), and injured three others, near Venkatakrishnapuram of Pedakakani mandal in Guntur district. The incident occurred after a fire broke out in a thatched house, causing three cylinders from nearby houses to explode.
According to Pedakakani police, Amishetty Srinivasa Rao, his wife, and their daughter lived in a single thatched house divided into two sections. On Sunday morning, the family lit lamps and performed prayer rituals as part of Karthika Masam before heading to the Nagendra Swami temple on the village outskirts.
Around 11 am, fire broke out in their house, which spread rapidly and caused two gas cylinders to explode. Hearing the commotion, local residents, including Amishetty Tulasinath (37), Guntamukkala Paramesh, Veeranjaneyaulu, and Mallikarjuna Rao, rushed to the spot to assess the damage. Unfortunately, a third cylinder exploded, propelling shrapnel that struck the four men.
The injured were immediately rushed to Guntur govt hospital, where Tulasinath succumbed to severe head injuries during treatment. Fire department personnel extinguished the blaze.
Before the incident, Tulasinath returned from his field after spraying pesticide and visited his in-laws’ home nearby, where his wife and children were present. He took precautionary measures by cutting off the power supply and removing the gas regulator at his in-laws’ house. Despite his wife Tirupatamma’s warnings not to approach the fire-stricken house, Tulasinath assured her he would observe from a distance. Minutes later, the cylinder exploded.
Tulasinath is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, the family of Srinivasa Rao suffered a financial blow. The fire destroyed Rs 5 lakh in cash stored in a cupboard—money saved from a chit fund and loans through DWCRA for constructing a new house.
