Visakhapatnam: City police are chalking out plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle traffic violations, improve traffic management and road safety and strategise ways to decongest traffic in the city, especially in the major choke points.
With the increasing vehicular traffic on the city road and traffic congestion, the AI system is designated to automatically issue e-challans to motorists for their traffic violations and send alerts to the nearest police stations in case of road crashes or disturbances on the road.
Speaking to TOI, additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic) K Praveen Kumar said that they have initiated a pilot project to integrate AI expertise into the city’s traffic management infrastructure for better traffic regulation. The AI-driven system will feature intelligent traffic lights that adapt their timing based on real-time traffic conditions, he added.
“So far, seven private firms have approached the city police for the proposed AI traffic management system. We will evaluate the firms, recommend the best firm and will forward to the GVMC for final approval for AI project,” Praveen said.
