Motorists who evaded payment of challans were caught in a special drive and their vehicles were seized.

Warangal: The traffic police have started identifying habitual traffic rules violators in the city and serving legal notices to them. The police have collected data of vehicle owners having more than ten challans pending on their vehicle and sent legal notices to about 5,431 of them so far.
The city police have stepped up their efforts to curtail the practice by performing frequent checks and enforcing penalties on violators. During the current year, the traffic police filed charge sheets against 1,115 people, produced them in court and collected fines. The police found 71,782 vehicles plying on the roads for top violations in the city and are trying to bring them to book.
According to traffic police, initially, chargesheets were filed against motorists who exceeded three challans and were presented in court. Motorists who evaded payment of challans were caught in a special drive and their vehicles were seized. Twice in the past, a huge discount was offered on the challans but many people did not use them. At present 150 pending challan vehicles are plying on the city roads, the traffic officials added.
Police officials reveal that e-challans are automatically referred to court within three days of penalisation, depriving the police of the jurisdiction to take direct action against violators. Consequently, a sense of fear associated with challans has diminished among the public.
The traffic police have identified vehicles committing the highest number of violations, indicating that many vehicles repeatedly violate rules throughout the year with little impact.
“Challans are continuously issued on vehicles for the violation of traffic rules, and the amount keeps increasing. The vehicle owner is not affected until attempting to sell it, as the No Objection Certificate is provided by the RTO at the time of sale, and only then must pending payments be settled,” an official said.
The traffic police have decided to carry on the special drive till the end of the year and ensure that all the pending challans are paid.
