A team of surgeons from various medical specialties, including neurology, neurosurgery, critical care, and ICU, successfully performed 25 Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgeries in just 24 days, with two procedures conducted on the same day. Dr. Dhanunjaya Rao Ginjupally, a senior neurosurgeon at Apollo Hospital who led the procedures, highlighted that performing DBS under general anesthesia eliminates the discomfort associated with awake surgeries while maintaining accuracy comparable to frame-based techniques using microelectrode recording.

Hyderabad: The surgeons at Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad on Thursday announced the launch of Fast Track Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, specializing in asleep DBS surgery for patients with movement (tremors) disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
Surgeons from multiple medical disciplines including neurology, neurosurgery, critical care and ICU have already collaborated to perform 25 DBS surgeries in 24 days, including two surgeries on the same day.
Senior neurosurgeon from Apollo Hospital, Dr. Dhanunjaya Rao Ginjupally, who led the procedures, said that DBS under general anaesthesia eliminates the discomfort of awake procedures and also delivers accuracy comparable to frame-based methods using microelectrode recording.
The Apollo Hospitals also utilizes AI-driven technology, brain-computer interfaces, and patient-specific micrometric targeting to enhance the precision of the DBS procedure. This will enable greater patient comfort, precision in the surgery and tailored care, said Dr. Subba Reddy, Critical Care Specialist and Neuro Intensivist and Dr. Ravindra Babu, Director, Medical Services, Apollo Hospitals.
